Typical photo booth screen sequence

A typical 4-photo session displays screens in the following order:

  1. ready.jpg
  2. 1.jpgtaking.jpgrelease.jpg
  3. 2.jpgtaking.jpgrelease.jpg
  4. 3.jpgtaking.jpgrelease.jpg
  5. 4.jpgtaking.jpgrelease.jpg
  6. processing.jpg
  7. confirm_printing.jpg (if enabled)
  8. share.jpg (if sharing is enabled)
  9. printing_confirmed.jpg

Ready screen overlay

ready_overlay.png is an optional overlay file displayed over both the ready.jpg screen and the live view. The image must be the same size as ready.jpg and must contain transparent areas so that the live view is visible beneath it. This makes it straightforward to add buttons, text, or graphics that appear over the live view without replacing it.

The overlay is displayed only during the ready screen and is automatically hidden when the countdown starts.

video_ready_overlay.png works the same way for the video booth ready screen.

Per-photo screen variants

A different taking.jpg, release.jpg, or preview.jpg can be shown for each photo in the sequence by appending the photo number to the filename:

  • taking1.jpg, release1.jpg, preview1.jpg — used for shot 1
  • taking2.jpg, release2.jpg, preview2.jpg — used for shot 2
  • and so on for each additional shot

Colour mode and copy count variants

Screens can vary by colour mode and number of print copies using the suffix pattern <screen>_<mode><copies>.jpg:

  • b = black and white
  • c = colour
  • t = monochrome toned
  • f through k = filters 1–6
  • 1 through 9 = number of print copies selected

When a screen is about to be displayed, Remote Pro checks for the most specific match first and falls back progressively. For example, if ready.jpg is about to be displayed with mode set to black and white and 2 copies selected, it checks in this order:

  1. ready_b2.jpg — black and white + 2 copies
  2. ready_b.jpg — black and white (any copies)
  3. ready_2.jpg — 2 copies (any mode)
  4. ready.jpg — fallback

To show colour mode and copy count variants from 1 to 3, you would need: ready_c1.jpg, ready_c2.jpg, ready_c3.jpg, ready_b1.jpg, ready_b2.jpg, ready_b3.jpg.

The screen updates automatically when a setting changes — for example, switching to black and white mode immediately updates the displayed image to reflect the new selection.

This technique also works for confirm_printing.jpg. Use confirm_printing_1.jpg, confirm_printing_2.jpg etc. together with the touchscreen actions Confirm printing (+ # prints) and Confirm printing (- # prints) to give guests visual feedback as they adjust their copy count.

Countdown tokens

The countdown text displayed on 1.jpg, 2.jpg etc. supports the following tokens:

  • {imageNumber} — the number of the current shot in the sequence, starting from 1
  • {numberOfImages} — the total number of shots in the sequence
  • {secsToNextPhoto} — seconds remaining until the next shot is taken

Animated GIF screens

Place an animated GIF with the same base name as a screen image in the photo booth images folder to animate that screen. For example, placing ready.gif in the folder plays it when the ready screen is displayed. Animated GIFs can overlap the live view — the live view remains visible through transparent areas of the GIF.

Looping

Append _loop to the filename to play the GIF continuously. For example: ready_loop.gif.

Positioning

By default, animated GIFs are centred on the screen. To position manually, append the pixel offsets in the form _{l<left>t<top>}. For example, ready_l200t100_loop.gif places the GIF 200 pixels from the left and 100 pixels from the top.

Sizing

Size can be specified as a percentage of the screen. For example, ready_{w50%}_loop.gif displays the GIF at half the screen width.

Countdown GIFs

When an animated GIF is placed on a countdown screen (e.g. named 1.gif), it replaces the countdown text and plays once. Approximately 1 second before the GIF ends, taking.jpg is displayed, and the photo is taken when the GIF completes.

Movie file screens

MP4 or QuickTime MOV files can replace JPEG screens using the same naming convention. For example, ready.mp4 plays when the ready screen is displayed. Movie files cannot overlap the live view — if live view is active, the movie displays in the area below it.

Looping

Append _loop to the filename for continuous playback. For example: ready_loop.mp4.

Positioning and sizing

Position and size work the same way as animated GIFs. For example, ready_{w50%}_loop.mp4 resizes the movie to half the screen width and loops continuously. If the movie is larger than the screen it is automatically scaled to fit.

Countdown movies

When a movie is placed on a countdown screen (e.g. 1.mp4), it replaces the countdown text and plays once. Approximately 1 second before the movie ends, taking.jpg is displayed, and the photo is taken when the movie completes.

Troubleshooting

If a movie does not play correctly, the cause is usually a missing video codec. Download and install the K-Lite Codec Pack from http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm to resolve most playback issues.

Audio prompts

Place a WAV file with the same base name as a screen in the photo booth images folder to play audio when that screen appears. For example, ready.wav plays when ready.jpg is displayed, and taking.wav plays when taking.jpg is displayed.

A WAV file named keyboard.wav will play whenever the on-screen keyboard is shown.

A typical 4-photo audio sequence:

  1. Booth readyready.jpg displayed, ready.wav played once
  2. Sequence starts1.jpg displayed with countdown text, 1.wav played once
  3. ~1 sec before shot 1taking.jpg displayed, taking.wav played once
  4. After shot 1 — preview shown (if enabled), then 2.jpg, 2.wav played
  5. ~1 sec before shot 2taking.jpg, taking.wav
  6. After shot 2 — preview shown, then 3.jpg, 3.wav played
  7. ~1 sec before shot 3taking.jpg, taking.wav
  8. After shot 3 — preview shown, then 4.jpg, 4.wav played
  9. ~1 sec before shot 4taking.jpg, taking.wav
  10. Processingprocessing.jpg displayed, processing.wav played. Images are formatted and sent to output. When complete, returns to ready.jpg and ready.wav plays again.

Optional info screens

One or more information screens can be displayed from the stills or video ready screens. Use these to show guests instructions, terms, sponsor content, or anything else before the session begins. Info screens close automatically after 30 seconds of inactivity.

Stills photo booth info screens

Create screen images named ready_info1.jpg, ready_info2.jpg, ready_info3.jpg etc. and place them in the photo booth images folder. Then assign the following touchscreen actions:

  • Photo info open — displays ready_info1.jpg from the ready screen
  • Photo info next — advances to the next info screen (e.g. ready_info1.jpgready_info2.jpg)
  • Photo info previous — returns to the previous info screen
  • Photo info close — closes the info screen and returns to ready.jpg
  • Photo info start — closes the info screen and immediately starts the shooting sequence

Video booth info screens

Create screen images named video_info1.jpg, video_info2.jpg, video_info3.jpg etc. and assign the following touchscreen actions:

  • Video info open — displays video_info1.jpg from the video ready screen
  • Video info next — advances to the next info screen
  • Video info previous — returns to the previous info screen
  • Video info close — closes the info screen and returns to video_ready.jpg
  • Video info start — closes the info screen and immediately starts video capture

Info screens support animated GIFs and MP4 movie files using the same naming conventions described above.

A watermark can be overlaid on prints shown in the confirm printing and sharing screens. Place a PNG file named print_watermark.png in the photo booth images folder. The PNG must include an alpha channel so the print is visible beneath the overlay.
